Dear Wine Lover,

Don’t miss out on this week’s wine tasting Friday and Saturday. Saturday David Corey will be pouring eight of his wines and we think they are some of the most exciting blends coming out of Santa Barbara.

2003 Core Hard Core Santa Barbara County $28.99

Robert Parker: The 2003 Hard Core Alta Mesa Vineyard is a blend of 52% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. A personality-filled red, it offers sweet black raspberry, chocolate, oak, and flower aromas as well as flavors. Dense and opulently-styled, with terrific fruit, and a lusty, heady finish, it will provide immense pleasure over the next 4-5 years. 274 cases were produced.

David Corey: A blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Hard Core offers itself as homage to the wines of Spain and Southern France. Mourvèdre dominates the blend – burly and brooding – while Grenache and Cabernet sing backup harmony. The wine is well balanced and there is a firmness that belies the richness of the fruit. This is a serious entry that will likely reward those who give it a bit of cellar time.

2003 Core Elevation Sensation Alta Mesa Santa Barbara $34.99

Robert Parker: The elegant 2003 Elevation Sensation Alta Mesa Vineyard is a blend of 49% Mourvedre, 49% Grenache, and 2% Syrah. Raspberry, blackberry, and cherry liqueur-like characteristics are present in this medium-bodied, finesse-styled effort that is reminiscent of a cool climate Chateauneuf du Pape (i.e., Rayas). Neither overblown nor big, it is a restrained yet authoritative red to drink over the next 3-4 years. 149 cases were produced.

David Corey: A delicious blend of Mourvèdre and Grenache made from grapes grown exclusively at Alta Mesa Vineyard – the Mourvèdre provides muscle and wild dark fruits while the Grenache lends generous, sunny, warmly scented red-berries. Juicy fruit and an open knit texture are invigorated by firm, mouth-coating tannin. This is a full-bodied wine that warms the soul, especially when enjoyed with hearty roasted meats and other earthy, rustic foods.

2003 Core Santa Barbara County Rose $14.99

Robert Parker: A blend of 75% Mourvèdre and 25% Cinsault, there are 139 cases of the value-priced 2003 Mourvedre Rose. The unusual label can only be explained as a surreal view of a gynecologist’s interpretation of the earth’s core. Tasty notes of plums, cherries, spice, herbs, and pepper emerge from this interesting rose.

2003 Core Blend 442 Santa Barbara County $23.99

Robert Parker: From an innovative winery, Core’s 2003 Blend 442 Alta Mesa Vineyard (44% Mourvèdre, 36% Grenache, and 20% Syrah) reveals a big, peppery, currant and cherry-scented bouquet, solid, ripe, dusty, earthy, medium-bodied flavors, and a muscular personality. It should drink well for 2-3 years. 470 cases were produced.

David Corey: A blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah, this is the bread and butter at Core Wines.  The nose shows notes of ripe raspberry, spice, lavender and leather carrying through to the palate. With a creamy smooth, elegant texture and great balance to support the irresistible fruit, the Blend 442 is sure to please a wide array of wine lovers.

2004 Core Blend 613 Santa Ynez Valley $20.99

David Corey: A blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, and Rousanne from vineyards located in the southern portion of Santa Barbara County, this is the introductory vintage of white wines in the CORE portfolio.  Light golden straw in color, the nose shows tropical fruits and plenty of floral aromas with a soft velvety texture.  This wine would pair nicely with poultry, fish and a variety of lighter foods. Only 138 cases were produced.

2004 Core b.core Santa Ynez Valley $27.99

David Corey: A blend of Marsanne and Rousanne, the b.core is a wine inspired by the great white wines of the northern Rhone. The wine exhibits a rich golden color with aromas of crushed flowers, melon and herbs dominating the nose.  The waxy texture of Marsanne comes through on the palate with minerals and noticeable acidity.  This wine would pair well with lighter meats such as poultry and pork in addition to pasta and rice dishes. Only 88 cases were produced.
