Dear Wine Lover,

Our gift to you, not one but two wineries this week!!!

Ovene Winery produces World Class Central Coast Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and an assortment of whites. Dark Horse Winery in Sonoma County produces exceptional Zinfandels and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

2005 Dark Horse Russian River Valley Zinfandel $27.99
I was taking the trail down along the Russian River and came across this beautiful little Zinfandel vineyard. I met the owners, sipped a glass of their wine and was sold. We now have another wine in the posse. It is brambly, spicy and full of dark, rich fruit. Production: 120 cases
2005 Dark Horse Treborce Vineyard Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel $27.99
Our 2004 Zinfandel is the real kick. The grapes were harvested from a hillside vineyard only a donkey would fall up. The trail winds through patches of blackberry, cherry and the occasional gooseberry bush. This Zinfandel was aged in 100% American oak – quite possibly from a tree in Daniel Boone's backyard. Like the nag in a horse race, the flavors just never finish. Production: 599 cases
2004 Dark Horse Scharf Family Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $29.99
And they're off! In the lead is great Aromas of Cassis and Black Cherry, on the rail is Hints of Cinnamon and Clove. Coming around the first turn Blackberry pushes White Pepper into the rail. It’s anyone's race as Big Oak is passed by Soft Tannins. As they come in to the stretch it’s a Long Velvety Finish. And the winner is…the Dark Horse. Production: 499 cases
2004 Ovene The Puzzle Central Coast Grenache $24.99
This sexy Grenache is a blend of warm to hot climate West Side Paso Robles grapes, Hearthstone Vineyard (55%) and high altitude, hot climate Barnwood grapes (30%).  Also from Barnwood, 15% Mourvedre was blended in to the Grenache to bridge the gap between the gorgeous fruit and the supple but firm finish.  After fermentation in small open top fermenters, this wine was barrel aged for over 24 months in French and American oak barrels.  This extended period in barrel allowed the initial young, jammy fruit characteristic to develop into an elegant and complex wine. Production: 136 cases
2004 Ovene San Antonio Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $24.99
This rich and spicy Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of a number of different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The grapes where harvested from the San Antonio Appellation, which lies within the foothills that lead up to the Santa Lucia mountains. The different clones, clone 4, 337 where blended together with the Cabernet Franc after fermentation in small open top fermenters. This wine was then barrel aged for over 24 months in French and American oak barrels. This extended period in barrel allowed the individual characteristics to age in harmony. Production: 165 cases
2005 Ovene The Puzzle San Luis Obispo Valley Pinot Noir $29.99
This elegant Pinot Noir displays the great diversity in growing regions on our Central Coast. 50% of the grapes that went into making this wine were harvested from the Laetitia vineyard on top of a rocky-volcanic slope facing the ocean. These extreme soils and cool climate give aromatic, intense fruit flavors and exotic spices.  The other 50% are harvested from a small family owned vineyard in the Templeton Gap, Latchford vineyard. This vineyard provides four different clones of ripe, earth-bound flavors and components.  The blend of the two is the Ying and Yang, creating one wine that is well balanced, fruit forward with supple tannins. Production: 699 cases
2004 Ovene Solomon Hill Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir $39.99
Soft rose petals intermingle with pepper and spices dominate the nose of this elegant wine. Up front, the wine shows ripe plumbs and dark cherry preserves followed by long, supple tannins and strong, refreshing acidity that remain in balance throughout the long finish. Production: 199 cases
2005 Ovene Royal Oak Vineyard San Ynez Sauvignon Blanc $14.99
This luscious classic California Sauvignon Blanc exhibits a nose of citrus and tropical fruit; guava, pineapple and a hint of banana. It is dry on the pallet with a touch of spice and minerality. Try this wine on it’s own or with your next summer BBQ. Production: 599 cases
2005 Ovene Opolo Vineyard Paso Robles Muscat Canelli $14.99
The exuberant nose of Peach and Nectarine with hints of bananas are seen in this off dry Muscat. This wine shows very ripe fruit supported by good acidity which gives the wine a spritzy freshness on the pallet. This “Candid” like wine is reminiscent of the Muscats D’Asti Italy’s famous sipping wines. Production: 120 cases
2005 Ovene Paradise Road Vineyard Santa Barbara County Viognier $17.99
The delicate aromas of peach stone and apricot intermingled with fuji apple are reflected in this lighter elegant style of Viogner. The peach like tones on the pallet with a gentle spiciness with a hint of minerality are seen in this wine. Production: 299 cases
2004 Ovene Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Blanc $17.99
Spices, bananas and papayas play throughout the nose, mouthfeel and finish of this complex wine. A creative blend of tank and barrel fermentation allowed both the fruit and minerality to showcase beautifully. Firm acidity and gorgeous fruit highlight this perfect backyard treasure. Production: 250 cases
2005 Ovene Santa Rita Hills Santa Barbara Chardonnay $19.99
This classic Chardonnay which is a blend of Bien Nacido Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley, and Zotovich Vineyard, Santa Rita Hills Appalachian, is a wine driven by structure containing a plethora of layers. In the glass, the balance is shown as sunny hayfields open up to caramelized apples, just as the thick, lingering texture is accented by a kiss of tartness. Production: 599 cases
