Departure Wine Company is a new boutique winery out of Santa Barbara County. The winemaker, Tim Grubb, is an up-and-coming young winemaker who decided to launch his own label after helping out at Tensley Wines for the past few vintages. Joey Tensley’s deft touch with Syrah must be contagious because Tim’s first release is a top-flight offering.

The Tierra Alta Vineyard in located in the Ballard Canyon area of the Santa Ynez Valley. Tierra Alta is a newly planted site that sits on a limestone infused hillside high above the town of Los Olivos. Tim was able to secure a low yielding block of Syrah on the top ridge. Tim's goal was to maximize complex aromatics and flavors but stay true to the vineyard. With this goal in mind, the 2005 Tierra Alta Vineyard Syrah is handcrafted every step of the way using two different clones of Syrah and just a touch of co-fermented Viognier to add elegance and lift to the finished wine. The wine draws you in with its floral aromatics and soft mouth feel, then showcases the dark, plush fruit that is the hallmark of Santa Ynez Valley Syrah.
