Flying Goat Tasting!!!

Owner and Winemaker Norm Yost has been making wine for over twenty five years. He has found his niche crafting Pinot Noirs that are reasonably priced and ready to drink upon release. Norm will be down to personally show you his new releases on Saturday.

A glance at the wine resting in crystal Burgundy wineglass foretells of the elegance and sophistication of this wine. Crimson-colored with maroon edges, this wine glistens with highlights and exuberance! A swirl releases berry notes of strawberry and dried raspberry, a distinctive white-pepper spice and barrel aromas of caramel and smoke. A silky texture delivers additional flavors of cranberry and pomegranate onto the palate. The 2005 Pinot Noir, Salisbury Vineyard has a nice spicy mid-palate grip, lively acids and superb balance. The finish is lingering, with notes of dried currant and red plum rounding out the elegant flavor profile. Production: 199 cases

2005 Flying Goat Rio Vista Vineyard Clone 2A Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir $39.89

A rich scarlet color with ruby edges first delights the eye, and a good swirl starts to coax elegant Burgundian aromas from the wine. A perfume of rhubarb, sandalwood spice and red raspberry is joined by a hint of barrel smokiness. Bright fruit notes first wake up the palate upon a taste, with notes of cranberry and black cherry mingling with pomegranate and a hint of the typical Sta. Rita Hills cola. This wine really evolves in the glass, with a spiciness and remembrance of autumn “candied apples” surfacing, and then leading to a beautiful follow-through and enduring finish. Production: 190 cases

2006 Flying Goat Dierberg Vineyard Santa Maria Pinot Noir $41.89

A glistening maroon color with garnet edges shimmers in the glass. A swirl unleashes spicy notes of sandalwood, lavender and cran-cherry with underlying hints of smoked bacon. That first taste first reminds of blackberries, then a bit of forest floor earthiness and hints of mocha, followed by nuances of boysenberry. The 2006 Pinot Noir, Dierberg is certainly displaying the maturity of the vines with superb structure and chic complexity from both fruit and barrel. Although the sunshine that always seemed to be a component to Flying Goat wines from Dierberg is still there, the wine displays a classiness that only comes with maturity and experience. This is a beautiful wine with “old world” style, and a lingering finish that just keeps going. Production: 352 cases

2007 Flying Goat Nielson Vineyard Santa Maria Pinot Gris $20.89

A subtle perfume of pears and just ripe white peach mingle with green apple and a hint of tropical papaya on the nose, and a swirl adds hints of grapefruit rind. Fuji apples and pears are surrounded by a flinty minerality and a lively, tangy texture. Production: 196 cases

2006 Flying Goat Goat Bubbles Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir Sparkling Rose $29.89

The 2006 vintage is a little more refined that the inaugural release. The color is a little richer, the bubbles are a bit tinier, and it’s a little more brut. There is an elegant bouquet of rose petals mingling with cranberry and then a reminiscence of maraschino cherries and newly baked bread. Lively and zingy across the palate, notes of framboise and just ripe wild strawberries are joined by hints of raspberry and kirsch, all wrapped up in the liveliness of the sparkling bubbles. A refreshing finish wakes up the taste buds and begs for just another taste. Production: 190 cases
