94 Point Buccella Cab!!

Buccella owner's Bill and Alicia Deem started their iconic brand with the 2002 vintage, hiring winemaking consultant Mark Herold (Merus, Kobalt, Hestan, and Kamen) to make their wines. The first vintages have all been small production. Beginning in 2005, the winery has added a Merlot to complement the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Robert Parker 94 points: The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as a restrained, linear effort, although it reveals terrific opulence for a vintage that is somewhat European in its aromatic, flavor, and textural profiles. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by rich, sweet, blueberry, blackberry, espresso roast, and toasty oak-like aromas, and surprising elegance and lightness for such a powerful wine. This 2005 should drink well for 10-15 years.

Vinfolio 96 points: The first vintage of any wine is always the opportunity for the winery to make a statement, and Buccella has certainly done that with their first Merlot. Impeccably farmed by the legendary Larry Hyde, it shows the pedigree of perfectly ripe fruit worked by one of the master artisans of Napa Valley, Mark Herold. After an hour in the glass it shows a fascinating rich nose of sun-warmed grain, clove, lychee and cassis, giving the wine a sense of pure exotica. The palate is intense with a stunningly smooth core of black plum and olive. Step out of your Merlot comfort zone for this truly unique experience.
