Colson Canyon Vineyard’s original 8-acre planting of Clone 7 is the backbone of the Tensley Wines program. Approximately half of our 2006 production comes from this highly sought-after parcel. The 2006 harvest was a late one; these grapes were not picked until early October. The extra hang time was very beneficial to the fruit, resulting in increased complexity and intensity of color, texture, and flavor. To take the intensity even further, the grapes were picked over a five day period. The first couple of picks were for acid and bright berry nuances; later picks showed increasing notes of pepper, smoke, and chocolate. The wine was then aged in 20% new French oak and 10% one-year-old French oak to add a bit of sweet vanilla and coffee to the finish. This Colson is rich and round in the mouth, its finish long and generous. Being so big yet so balanced, this Syrah will age gracefully over the next 8 to 10 years yet is still quite approachable and appealing now.
